A loss leader is a pricing strategy where a business sells a product at a price lower than its cost, often at a loss, to attract customers. The intention behind this approach is to drive traffic and increase sales of other products that carry higher profit margins. The loss leader is typically a popular item, heavily discounted, to grab the attention of potential buyers. Once customers make the initial purchase, they may end up buying additional, more profitable products, thus compensating for the loss incurred on the lead item.

In dropshipping, loss leaders are often used to draw in customers, particularly when trying to build brand recognition or gain a competitive edge. By offering an attractive product at a low price, a business can increase site traffic, boost conversion rates, and improve the chances of customers making larger purchases.
